Name: Jesse Baker

Title: General Manager Passenger Rail and Safety

Affiliation: Australasian Railway Association (ARA)

Jesse is a mechanical engineer who began his career in the automotive industry in Melbourne. In 2004 he moved to the UK and took up a role in their railway at RSSB – initially in R&D and later moving into long term (30 years+) strategic planning for the industry. Through those roles Jesse gained a good understanding of how Europe grapples with many of the same issues that we’re exposed to here – notably optimisation, interoperability, cost, and safety. After the better part of a decade, Jesse returned home where that experience served him well when he joined RISSB in 2012. At RISSB Jesse oversaw the delivery of Standards (and Codes Practice, Guidelines and other products) for all railway disciplines, and also drove RISSB’s safety agenda. Jesse joined the ARA team in 2023 where he now supports the Passenger Operators Executive Committee (POEC) and its sub committees, as well as the Safety Policy Committee, building on the great work in these important portfolios.
