Name: Shaoyan Zou

Title: PhD research student

Affiliation: Monash University

Shaoyan Zou is a recent graduate of Monash University, having completed a Master of Professional Engineering in Civil Engineering with a Transport specialisation in 2024. He also holds a double degree in Civil Engineering (Honours) and Commerce from Monash. Shaoyan is currently pursuing a PhD investigating the social distribution of transfer penalties in Melbourne’s public transport network, exploring how the disutility of transferring between services varies across socio-economic groups. His research examines the spatial, behavioural, and theoretical drivers of transfer resistance —  including the role of network design, induced transfer penalties, and the non-physical components of transfer disutility such as anxiety, uncertainty, and perceived effort. His broader interests include road safety, traffic engineering, and intelligent transport systems.
