One of Tim’s main interests is the application of Markov-chain Monte Carlo methods to problems in statistical mechanics, especially to the study of critical phenomena. This involves developing, and rigorously analyzing, new Monte Carlo algorithms for studying discrete/combinatorial models in equilibrium statistical mechanics, such as the Ising and Potts models. It also involves studying systems far from equilibrium, such as traffic models, by simulating stochastic cellular automata.
